Finding the firmware can be a little bit tricky depending on the cell phone. I know on certain Nokia phones you can type *#0000# in the call screen (when blank) and it will tell you the version number. Other phones you can type in *#0000#.
If you are wanting to upgrade the firmware to get the latest version(s) with better features normally you'll find this under network settings or under about settings. Sometimes, unfortunately, you will have to use a data cable to update the firmware by downloading the software from the manufacturer's support website.
